Steve Elias MD FACS, Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery, Mount Sinai School of
Medicine NY, Director, Center for Vein Disease, Englewood Hospital and Medical
Center NJ Is Available For Interviews As He Is One Of Four Doctors In The Country
With This Expertise

ENGLEWOOD, NEW JERSEY, (February 8, 2007) - All told, when he is asked to count,
Dr. Steve Elias can come up with almost 300 names of doctors he has personally
trained in some of the least invasive, most effective vein surgeries in
cardiovascular medicine.

In his 22 years as a vascular surgeon, he has made it a point to be on the cutting
edge: in the early 80s, he was among the first to publish on the Axillary Vein Valve
Transplant technique. Today, he can name to his pioneering credit TriVex (he was one
of the first four surgeons in the entire world to perform the procedure), EVLT,
Closure, and PAPS (Percutaneous Ablation of Perforators). Dr. Elias initially became
interested in vein surgery when he was a surgical resident, "I was lucky enough to
have Dr. Syed Taheri, a pioneer of modern vein surgery, take me under his wing at a
time when most vascular surgeons were not the least bit interested in vein disease."
Dr. Elias continues, "As a young surgical resident, I was impressed how thankful and
happy patients were after treatment. Their typical comment was, 'My doctor told me
to just live with it. Thank you for doing something that has made a big difference
in my life.' I have kept those comments with me my entire career."

Today, three decades later, he is the Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the
Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and the Director of the Center for Vein
Disease at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center in New Jersey. Surgeons around the
Tri-State area from Columbia Presbyterian, New York University, Mount Sinai Medical
Center, Long Island Jewish, SUNY at Stony Brook, Lenox Hill Hospital, UMDNJ and
Newark Beth Israel have all been trained by Dr. Elias. In addition, surgeons from
the Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, New England Tufts Medical Center, University of
Michigan, Australia, Germany, England, and Spain have attended training courses at
Englewood with Dr. Elias.

The cases Dr. Elias handles on a regular basis range from the treatment of deep
venous thrombosis and vein disease complications such as ulcers to the cosmetic
management of spider and varicose veins. All procedures are same-day, office or
ambulatory surgery; all are performed with the use of local anesthesia and most
procedures are done without any incisions and employ laser, radiofrequency, or
chemical energy. Dr. Elias also proctors surgeons at their own institutions when
they are performing their first minimally invasive vein procedures and, in this
capacity, he has traveled to the Mayo Clinic, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Case
Western Reserve, Columbia Presbyterian, Mount Sinai Hospital and Montefiore Medical
Center. He has been featured on CNN, Fox News, CBS, NBC and ABC. Dr. Elias is a
fellowship-trained vascular surgeon with the Fellow of the American College of
Surgeons and a member of the American Venous Forum, American College of Phlebology,
Society for Clinical Vascular Surgery, and the International Society of
Cardiovascular Surgery. He publishes regularly and he is committed to seeking out
new procedures, teaching other physicians, and giving total vein care to his
patients. "Throughout my surgical career, I have followed the same credo: respect
elders, embrace the new, encourage the improbable and the impractical, and-most
importantly-do so without bias."
